Cohort Blocks

The Cohort Blocks interface allows administrators to manage reusable cohort block definitions used throughout the LinQ Explorer system. Cohort blocks are pre-configured sets of criteria that can be used to build cohorts more efficiently, particularly for common conditions and rare diseases.

Accessing the Cohort Blocks Interface

To access the Cohort Blocks management interface:

  1. Navigate to App Management from the main navigation
  2. Click on Cohort Blocks from the App Management menu
  3. The Cohort Blocks interface will display all cohort blocks configured in the system

Cohort Blocks Interface Overview

The Cohort Blocks interface provides a comprehensive view of all cohort blocks in the system. You can see block names, categories, therapeutic areas, types, tags, usage status, and manage entries from this centralized location.

Cohort Blocks Interface

Header Section

The header section of the Cohort Blocks interface contains three main elements:

  • Page Title: "Cohort Blocks" displayed prominently at the top-left of the page
  • Search Bar: Located in the top-right area, allows you to search for cohort blocks by typing keywords in the "Search cohort blocks" field
  • Add Block Button: A prominent blue button with a white plus icon and "Add Block" text, positioned next to the search bar

Searching for Cohort Blocks

To search for specific cohort blocks:

  1. Click in the "Search cohort blocks" input field in the header
  2. Type any part of the cohort block name, category, or other identifying information
  3. The table will automatically filter to show matching cohort blocks as you type
  4. Clear the search field to view all cohort blocks again

The search functionality filters the cohort blocks table in real-time as you type. For example, typing "Rare Disease" in the search field will display only cohort blocks whose names or categories contain "Rare Disease". The filtered results are displayed immediately, making it easy to find specific cohort blocks in large lists.

Adding a New Cohort Block

To add a new cohort block to the system:

  1. Click the "Add Block" button in the header
  2. A dialog or form will appear prompting you to enter cohort block details
  3. Fill in the required information:
    • Cohort block name
    • Category
    • Therapeutic area
    • Type (internal/external)
    • Tags
    • Status
  4. Click "Save" or "Create" to add the cohort block to the system
  5. The new cohort block will appear in the table

Cohort Blocks Data Table

The main content area displays a comprehensive table listing all cohort blocks in the system. The table includes the following columns:

Table Columns

  • Name: The full name of the cohort block, displayed with a briefcase icon preceding it. Examples include "Rare Disease Malignant Hyperthermi", "Rare Disease Acute Radiation Syndro", "Rare Disease Cyanide Poisoning Dia", etc.
  • Category: A shorter category name for the cohort block (e.g., "Malignant Hyper", "Acute Radiation", "Cyanide Poisoni")
  • Therapeutic Area: The therapeutic area classification associated with the cohort block (e.g., "Rare Disease")
  • Type: Indicates whether the cohort block is "internal" or "external"
  • Tags: Tags associated with the cohort block, typically displayed as comma-separated values (e.g., "Exact,Rare")
  • In Use: Indicates whether the cohort block is currently being used. A hyphen ("-") typically indicates the block is not in use or the status is not applicable
  • Status: The current publication status of the cohort block, displayed as a button (typically "Published" shown in light blue)
  • Actions: Icons for editing, deleting, and accessing more options for the cohort block record

Understanding Cohort Block Status

The Status column indicates whether a cohort block is published or in draft:

  • Published: The cohort block is published and available for use throughout the system. This is displayed as a light blue pill-shaped button with white text "Published".
  • Draft: The cohort block is in draft status and may not be available for use until it is published. This would be displayed as a different colored button (typically gray).

The status is displayed as a colored button in the table, making it easy to identify the state at a glance. The color coding provides immediate visual feedback about each cohort block's availability.

Understanding "In Use" Status

The "In Use" column indicates whether a cohort block is currently being used in any active cohorts:

  • In Use: Shows a count or indicator if the cohort block is actively being used in one or more cohorts
  • Not In Use (-): A hyphen indicates the cohort block is not currently being used in any active cohorts

This information helps administrators understand which cohort blocks are actively being utilized and which ones may be candidates for review or removal if they are no longer needed.

Cohort Block Actions

Each cohort block row in the table includes action buttons in the rightmost column:

Editing a Cohort Block

To edit an existing cohort block's information:

  1. Locate the cohort block in the table
  2. Click the pencil icon (edit icon) in the Actions column for that entry
  3. An edit dialog or form will appear with the cohort block's current information pre-filled
  4. Modify the fields you want to update:
    • Name
    • Category
    • Therapeutic Area
    • Type
    • Tags
    • Status
  5. Click "Save" to apply the changes

Deleting a Cohort Block

To delete a cohort block from the system:

  1. Locate the cohort block in the table
  2. Click the trash can icon (delete icon) in the Actions column for that entry
  3. A confirmation dialog will appear to prevent accidental deletions
  4. Confirm the deletion by clicking "Delete" or "Confirm" in the dialog
  5. The cohort block will be removed from the system and will no longer appear in the table
Warning: Deleting a cohort block is a permanent action. Ensure you have proper authorization and that the cohort block should no longer be used before proceeding with deletion. Consider the impact on existing cohorts that may reference this cohort block, especially if it shows as "In Use".

More Options

The three vertical dots icon (more options) provides access to additional actions for the cohort block:

  • View detailed information
  • Duplicate the cohort block
  • Export the cohort block definition
  • Other administrative actions

Pagination Controls

When there are many cohort blocks in the system, the table uses pagination to display entries in manageable pages. The pagination controls are located at the bottom of the table.

Pagination Features

  • Page Indicator: Shows the current page number and total pages (e.g., "1 of 88"). The current page number is displayed in an input field, making it easy to see your position in the list
  • Item Count: Displays the range of items shown and total items (e.g., "1-10 of 880 items"). This shows how many cohort blocks are displayed on the current page out of the total number of cohort blocks
  • Rows Per Page: A dropdown menu allowing you to select how many cohort blocks to display per page (default is 10). Available options typically include 10, 25, 50, 100, etc.
  • Navigation Arrows: Four navigation buttons:
    • First page (K icon): Jump to the first page
    • Previous page (< icon): Go back one page
    • Next page (> icon): Advance one page
    • Last page (>I icon): Jump to the last page

Using Pagination

To navigate through multiple pages of cohort blocks:

  1. Use the arrow buttons to move between pages
  2. Click the first/last page buttons to jump to the beginning or end of the list
  3. Use the "Rows per page" dropdown to change how many cohort blocks are displayed per page (10, 25, 50, 100, etc.)
  4. The page indicator shows your current position in the list
  5. You can also type a page number directly into the page number input field to jump to a specific page
